Information Management to Maximize Your Yields

Corn Emergence and Growing Degree Days (GDD)

Corn typically requires 90 to 120 GDD from planting to emergence, assuming adequate soil moisture. It does vary, however, with planting depth, tillage system and residue cover. As a rule of thumb, if 120 GDD have accumulated since planting and seedlings haven’t emerged, check the condition of planted seed. We are well above last year’s GDD accumulation for March 1st – April 27th:

Month         2012              2011

March         237                 23

April          144                 106

Total          381                 129
