Corn Rootworms Are Hatching Early

Based on growing degree information, corn rootworm hatching has just begun in West Central Iowa and about to begin in Northwest Iowa.

This is only a few days earlier than normal but about two weeks earlier than last year. With early larval establishment, we could see earlier adult corn rootworm emergence too.

It is recommended every field be scouted for corn rootworm damage regardless of seed selection, even though Bt corn should decrease populations in most fields.
